Oscar is one of the most prestigious film awards. But the selection of films that are nominated not only depends on the quality of the film, but also on the politics, gender and even the reputation of the actors and directors. Possibly for that reason, every year, the ceremony ignores excellent films that were nominated to other prestigious awards and even obtained important distinctions. World Of Weird tries to see things without prejudice. On this occasion, we have compiled for you films that were not at the Oscars; however, they were well received by eminent critics of other international competitions and evaluated positively by the spectators.
1. The rider
At first, it seems that it is an unlikely story about the resident of an American village: after receiving an injury, he had to quit the job of horse tamer and return to the Indian reservation. But, as time passes, it becomes evident that it is not just a simple drama about the difficulties of a normal person's life. Here, the protagonist finds himself in search of his personality. Thanks to its philosophical message, the film can be understood by anyone regardless of the country of residence and the language. Since the search for their path and vocation is a problem of the common society.
2. Maudie
This is a low-budget film from the Irish film festival. The film did not win prestigious awards, but many film critics named it one of the best films of last year. Romantic, fun and a very real story that tells us that love does not depend on reason or logic, but can simply transform a person to be unrecognizable. The spectators will see the development of a relationship between two people, at first glance, common and current: a fish merchant and a maid with their hands paralyzed due to illness. Thanks to love and faith in another person, the girl dares to dedicate herself to art and becomes a successful painter.
3. Columbus
Another strong drama that went unnoticed by film critics. A man from South Korea arrives in a small American town to take care of his seriously ill father. There, he meets a woman who has a similar situation. According to the rules of the genre, between the characters has to start a romantic relationship. But instead of lightness and sentimentality, a deep intellectual message arises and complicated questions about love and family that will not only make the viewer see the film, but also reflect on his life.
4. Mandy
It's a psychological thriller about how fast a person can go from being a good citizen to a cruel hunter. A woodcutter and his beloved lived quietly in the forest until she was kidnapped. The plot may seem trivial, but it is quickly discovered that the kidnappers are part of a religious sect. This fact leaves a trace both in the plot and on the stage, the soundtrack makes the film unique among the films of this type.
5. Kedi
If you are looking for a nice movie that will cheer your life, then this is the right choice. An original film about our four-legged brothers shown from their perspective. The place of events in the film in Istanbul, where thousands of cats live. The spectator has the possibility to go through his favorite routes and at the same time study the history of this ancient city. Not only will they show animals with different characters and destinations, but also the people who care for them.
6. 120 beats per minute
Another film about social problems. At the center of this story in Paris in the early 1990s and activists trying to draw attention to the problem of AIDS patients. First, the film is a drama dedicated to human tragedy. However, here is a deeper message: the attempt to remember that you should not judge other people and close your eyes to problems because in one way or another they can touch any individual. This film turned out to be so strong that in 2017 it received immediately 4 Palme d'Or awards.
7. The Meyerowitz: the family is not chosen (new and selected stories)
This film is similar to a profound novel: in some of them, they show us the story of a family with all its joys and difficulties. A derailed son and a successful brother, a father who had a complicated life and all the complexities in the relationship of a family are presented realistically but with a bit of humor. Although this film is about the problems between parents and children, it gives us to understand that love exists and all is not lost. This film not only impressed the spectators but also the Cannes jury and won the Palme d'Or prize.
8. Leave No Trace
It is one of the most original films of last year. A rare case in which in the center of the plot are a father and his daughter without a home, however, you quickly realize that they live like that by their own choice and not by some kind of social injustice. They are satisfied with life in a forest park near the city but isolated from people. However, in any case, people arrive who want to take them out of their place of accommodation. The film makes you see the world from another angle and doubt that the "normal" is equal to the "good", and also raise questions about the education of children and the place of the human being in society.
9. Ingrid Goes West
A comedy-drama about modern society and how a beautiful image does not always coincide with reality. Ingrid is a girl with mental disorders obsessed with her idol. She follows the star in social networks, who has thousands of followers and a perfect life. At least, that's how it looks on the screen. Ingrid wants to know this girl passionately, although for this she has to go to Los Angeles. Finally, he manages to make the trip: the fanatic and the star not only communicate, but they become friends. But in the immediate vicinity, it turns out that life in social networks and in reality are two completely different things.
10. The pastry chef from Berlin
It is one of the strongest dramas of recent years. The protagonist is a pastry chef, however, in the middle of the story, his profession is not found. The man returns from Germany to Jerusalem to meet people he has never seen, but he wanted to meet. Like any other good drama, this movie will help you understand yourself and the people around you better. Or, at least, reflect on what is necessary.
11. The Tale
One of the main nominees for the Golden Globe. At the center of the plot is a conflict between mother and daughter, but the essence is not in the perception of the world of different generations, but in social problems and different points of view towards them. In addition, this story makes us fail our memory: it displaces and replaces episodes that can scare or sadden us. As a result, viewers will see two completely different points of view about the same event, on which each of them will keep their version. In the end, it is where they show us that the truth is only one.
The Oscars undoubtedly bring together the most spectacular films of the year. However, you can always find and see with pleasure a couple of great films that went unnoticed.
